The wolf is spreading and with it the cracks are piling up.

It is not yet officially clear whether the predator also killed a deer calf in the Schöffau area.

Regardless, the hunting tenant and the chairman of the hunting association advise citizens traveling in the landscape to be careful.

Schöffau

– It is a wooded area between Bad Kohlgrub and Uffing.

Wolves also obviously feel comfortable in the area.

The authorities have already given a pair of wolves that were classified as loyal to their location a territory called “Staffelsee-West”.

It extends over parts of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Weilheim-Schongau districts.

Footage from a wildlife camera shows that there are already wolf offspring.

In the Gspeichert area near Schöffau, a forest owner made an unpleasant discovery on January 10th.

He found a deer calf that had been killed.

Hunting tenant Johann Samm also looked at the carcass.

“The animal was really gutted,” he says.

“The chest was torn open.” The calf also had a “typical throat bite.”

“And half of one leg was cut off.” Samm does not rule out the possibility that it was several wolves that hunted and killed the deer calf.

He can also imagine that it was the young wolves.

According to Johann Winkler, chairman of the Schöffau hunting association, a single dog has no chance of killing deer.

If so, there must have been several dogs.

In such cases, the State Office for the Environment (LfU) is responsible.

According to a spokesman, the case was reported to the LfU on January 10th.

“A member of the Large Carnivore Network took up the case on site and secured samples for genetic testing.” However, the results are not yet available at the moment.

There is a lot of forest in this area near Schöffau.

The Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office is also aware of the crack.

Due to the lack of results, “no reliable statement can yet be made as to whether it was a wolf tear and whether several animals were involved,” says spokesman Stephan Scharf.

“However, according to the crack assessor’s assessment, the crack suggests the involvement of a wolf.”

Hunting owner Samm advises walkers, horse riders and other people who travel in the area - according to him there are many - to be careful.

Dogs are often not on a leash.

Recently, Samm observed a wolf walking 200 meters away from him in broad daylight.

He was only 100 meters away from walkers.

Winkler sees things similarly.

“People have to be careful.” Because some wolves have lost their fear of people.

Winkler sees the “great risk that a confrontation will occur with people who walk their dogs on the weekend.”

In the spring, when the offspring are born, the wolves defend their litter.

“I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go into the undergrowth.

I just hope there isn’t a second pack.”
