The Chancellor wants to deport people on a large scale.
But the Greens have negotiated a passage into the new law that could prevent exactly that in practice.
A comment by Georg Anastasiadis.
Deportations, even when they involve serious offenders, are an extremely difficult business.
Lufthansa employees report bizarre scenes on board the airline that is supposed to bring illegal migrants back home.
Escorted by police officers and apparently calm, those affected take their seats on the plane and fasten their seatbelts.
But as soon as the pilot closes the doors, the wife of the person being deported begins to scream hysterically.
Apparently she can no longer be calmed down - until the pilot gives up in exasperation and asks the police officers to leave the plane and the deportation passengers out of consideration for fellow passengers.
This ties up numerous civil servants and costs the state, i.e. the taxpayers, an enormous amount of money.
The new package of regulations, optimistically called the “repatriation law” by the traffic light, which passed the Federal Council yesterday, is intended to make deportations easier, for example by enabling longer detention pending deportation and a tougher approach towards multiple offenders.
However, the Greens have negotiated an obligation into the law to provide legal counsel to deportees in advance.
When viewed in light, this is nothing other than an invitation to go into hiding, practitioners warn.
This will likely present police officers with new problems.
The great anger of the CDU and CSU about this is understandable.
The Chancellor's promise that Germany must "deport on a large scale" probably cannot be fulfilled with such paper tigers - and the "fight against the right" cannot be won, no matter how often Olaf Scholz can interfere with his fellow demonstrators.
It will not be possible to regain control over illegal migration through half-hearted measures.
In addition to the citizen's money, which destroys work incentives, it remains the Achilles heel of this left-dominated government.
