My two really enjoy reading.

I would like to pass on this enthusiasm and help those who find it difficult.

Some of them recently met in the Geretsried city library to exchange experiences.

Geretsried/Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – There are over 100 volunteer reading sponsors at the 15 primary schools in the district.

During school, they support the children with reading in the morning and often with learning German.

Some of the sponsors from the northern district met on Tuesday morning in the city library for a leisurely breakfast to exchange experiences.

Mayor Michael Müller had previously thanked the helpers for their valuable work: “They pass on the joy of reading.”

The sponsors are an important source of support for the schools.

You take one or more children from class and practice intensively and individually with them in a separate room.

“This is a great relief for the teachers.

“We need a lot more reading mentors,” says Birgit Kneuer, teacher and reading representative at the Wolfratshauser Hammersmith School.

Margit Engl, who coordinates the work of volunteers at the district office in Bad Tölz, asked the 30 or so sponsors present to report on their experiences.

Most of them are seniors, some are also young parents.

When she retired in 2021, Beate Herold decided to do something useful with her time.

Since then, at the Eglingen elementary school, she has looked after either four to five students in a class who are underchallenged or two to three who are overwhelmed.

“All the children are fighting to be able to practice reading with me,” she says.

Richard Marschner, mentor at the Wolfratshauser elementary school, is also pleased that the youngsters see it as a privilege and not a punishment when they are taken out of class.

The children “are totally relaxed during the lessons and when they meet me on the street they always say hello in a very friendly way,” he reports.

Reading sponsors at primary schools in the district: “We started with very simple things”

Petra Lang-Marek herself has two children in the first and fourth grades at the Dietramszell elementary school.

“My two really enjoy reading.

“I want to pass on this enthusiasm and help those who don’t find it so easy,” says the mother.

Barbara Kraus, whose granddaughter goes to the Isardamm elementary school in Geretsried, regularly supports two foreign children who do not yet speak German well.

“We started with very simple things.”

Kraus is “every time happy about the progress” of her protégés.

Wiltrud Beutler, a volunteer at the primary school in Münsing, is also amazed at what is possible within a short period of time.

“A child has to do a lot to grow up, to become a member of society,” she thinks.

The reading sponsors rely on exercise material provided by the teachers as well as their own ideas.

Detlev Ringer, a reading coach at Karl Lederer Elementary School for four years, incorporates small mathematical tasks into his lessons.

“I want to promote logical thinking.

This is especially fun for the girls and boys who can already read quite well.”

Reading sponsors rely on exercise material provided by teachers

Ursula Hummel has not only been a reading sponsor in Dietramszell for two years, she even assists the class teacher in lessons, which she finds “totally exciting”.

Karin Teichert, a former educator, however, prefers to only work with one child at a time at the Wolfratshausen elementary school.

In her opinion, this 1:1 funding brings the most.

All sponsors unanimously reported that they were welcome guests among the students.

They don't have to be strict like the teachers and there is no pressure on them to perform.

The only requirement for volunteering is that you like children and enjoy reading, says Margit Engl.

At the end, the reading sponsors were able to get inspiration for child-friendly reading during a tour of the city library with director Hannah Vogel.
