Overwhelmed by the voting results: The city of Freising has unanimously approved the budget - which is not only pleasing to mayor Eschenbacher.

For many months, the city of Freising struggled to find a budget that could be approved.
Now the vote took place - it left the mayor speechless for a moment.

- The situation seemed hopeless, but now the city of Freising has managed it and drawn up a budget that will most likely be approved by the legal supervisory authority.
The financial plan was approved on Thursday – unanimously.
Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher was at a loss for words about this for a moment.
Mr. Eschenbacher, you were speechless for a moment after the vote.
What exactly overwhelmed her?
This strong sign of a collegial body.
I didn't expect everyone to go.
This represents the committee’s high sense of responsibility.
And it shows: We can argue about the matter, but when it comes down to it, we stand together and are jointly responsible.
That really overwhelmed me.
Looking back on the past few months.
What particularly gave you sleepless nights?
The hopelessness that was in the room in autumn.
When it became clear that everyone wanted to contribute constructively, everyone was prepared to save, but at the same time the deficit was so large that none of this was enough.
And then, of course, the suggestions in the consolidation report, such as eliminating the open-plan allowance.
Of course that would have brought us a lot for the budget, but at the same time people would have run away from us and we would have had an even bigger staffing problem.
In the end, the only option was to take a little something away from everyone instead of making a few huge cuts - which is what our treasurer Johannes Hutter and his team did.
Will there no longer be any major projects in Freising in the long term?
The budget we have now is not an austerity budget.
That's why there are currently some major projects in there, such as the construction of Fire Station II. What we have now is a very tightly knit budget.
Without wanting to paint the devil on the wall: What happens if the legal supervisory authority does not approve this budget either?
I can't imagine that with the best will in the world.
We can't make a better suggestion.
And we don't have the leverage like the district to increase the district levy.

Has the city council moved closer together?
After all, there have been many months of constructive debates and, in the end, the unanimous decision.
It showed that everyone on the committee is ready to take responsibility and stand together.
Of course that has something to do with a decision-making body.
The voting result is a strong signal.
