Around twenty
journalists
were
detained this Saturday in Moscow
, the capital of Russia, when they were covering for different media
a demonstration by the wives of soldiers fighting in Ukraine
and demanding the return of their husbands.
A cameraman from the AFP
news agency
, detained during the protest, estimated that
between 20 and 25
journalists were
with him in the police van that took him to a police station
in the Russian capital after being arrested by local police.
For several weeks, wives, mothers and sisters of soldiers mobilized in Ukraine grouped in a movement called
"The Way Home"
have been meeting in
Red Square, in front of the Kremlin, to demand the return of their husbands from Vladimir Putin's regime
, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.
This is a sensitive issue for the authorities, who until now have refrained from repressing the nascent protest movement.
In general,
the Russian media does not cover these protests
and the Kremlin tries at all costs to display an image of unity around President Putin, especially in the face of the suspected presidential rigging of March 2024, in which the president has the victory almost assured.
According to Putin, 244,000 Russian soldiers are currently fighting in Ukraine, out of a total contingent of 617,000 soldiers.
