The automatic emergency call systems in cars are a blessing and a curse.

This became clear at the annual meeting of the Tölz fire department.

Bad Tölz

- On the one hand, the so-called Ecalls can save lives, but on the other hand, they give the fire departments a lot of false alarms.

All in all, the Tölzer fire brigade has never been on the move as often as last year - 271 missions meant a new record.

The number of false and false alarms increases from 44 to 67

The false and false alarms are a big issue at the Tölz fire department.

Their number increased from 44 to 67 last year, reported Commander Thomas Fuchsgruber.

38 of these alarms were caused by fire alarm systems, and automatic emergency calls were responsible for four false alarms.

The most spectacular fire in the city last year: On February 11th, a pavilion in the rose garden caught fire.

The fire brigade spent two and a half hours extinguishing the fire.

These emergency calls are triggered, for example, when an airbag in a car deploys or when the speed sensor in a smartphone registers noticeable movement.

“Twice we had the case that a smartphone was simply lying on the roof of a car,” reported Fuchsgruber.

“We went there and looked for the phone, even though nothing had happened.” The commander assumes that the number of Ecalls will continue to rise as this technology becomes more widespread.

People have to learn to deal better with new technology

The Tölzers are on trend with these numbers.

The number of false alarms in the district rose from 200 to 302 last year, reported district fire inspector Wolfgang Stahl.

But Ecalls are also a technical achievement: “Someone might drive into a tree at night.

And then an Ecall is the only way to get a rescue.” Maybe people still need to learn how to use the new technology better.

Many alarms are triggered when vehicles are being repaired in workshops.

In addition, people must learn that “if an accident occurs, they should sit in the car for a short time and not immediately insult the other road user.”

When an e-call is received, an attempt is made to reach those involved in the accident by telephone, says Stahl.

“If no one is in the car anymore, the callback will be ineffective.”

Number of missions reaches record high

With 271 missions, the Tölz fire department reached a new record last year, Fuchsgruber reports.

And this despite the fact that the district town was only marginally affected by the large hailstorm that hit the district on August 26th.

The fire department waited a few minutes until the “bad storm” was over.

Fuchsgruber: “It was too dangerous to go out on the streets.” In the hours that followed, the fire department had to deal with alarms about fallen trees and broken branches.

The fire brigade had the greatest deployment at the Alte Madlschule, where the storm had covered a tin roof.

Tölzer fire department helps out in Jenbach

Smaller units drove to Benediktbeuern to inspect and prioritize the damage on site.

On August 27th, the fire department helped fill sandbags, and on August 28th a call for help was received from the partner fire department in Jenbach.

At that time, the Inn was flooding and pushed water into a stream in the municipality.

There was a risk that a company site and a settlement would be flooded.

The Jenbachers therefore asked for a large pump from Bad Tölz: “They only have small pumps,” explained Fuchsgruber.

Since the pump was not needed in the district and many other fire departments were on duty here, the decision was made to bring the pump to Jenbach: "It was a nice meeting - it's nice if you can help."

The Tölz fire department had to deal with fallen trees and broken branches a second time on December 2nd.

Roads were blocked due to the heavy snowfall and a tree lay on top of a car.

No major fires in the city area

The urban area was spared from major fires last year.

The most notable was a kitchen fire on Klosterweg on February 7th due to a defective oven and the fire in a pavilion in the rose garden on February 11th.

In order to extinguish all embers, the very sturdy pavilion had to be cut down using chainsaws and cable winches.

Serious accident on the bypass road

According to Fuchsgruber, the first serious accident occurred on March 8th, when two vehicles collided head-on near the pedestrian bridge on the bypass.

The fire department was informed about the accident on Greilinger Berg via ecall.

Here a car left the road and crashed into a tree.

The engine block had been torn out and was lying on the road.
