Digitalization and education have had to go hand in hand since the Corona pandemic at the latest.

Also at universities.

A study shows how digitally positioned Bavaria is.

Passau - Giving lectures via video call or ensuring functioning WiFi in the university building - that alone does not constitute digitalization at German universities.

In addition to the technical framework, the content also counts.

A Germany-wide comparison of the largest universities by the online portal hotjar.de shows: Bavaria makes it into the top 10 with two universities.

Digitization check: University of Passau comes in third place, TU Munich in ninth place

In order to measure digitalization as a multidimensional construct, the authors use four categories: proportion of digital degree programs, assessment of digital learning, online documents per degree program and proportion of dissertations with a digital connection.

These four categories result in a total number.

With 224 points, the University of Passau comes in third, behind the Fernuniversität Hagen in first place and the RWTH Aachen in second place. Passau does particularly well when it comes to dissertations with a digital connection; no other university achieves a higher value.

“Digitization check” procedure

For the analysis, the authors examined the

100 German universities and colleges

with the most students.

They generated data for the assessments for digital learning on

StudyCheck

and the number of online documents on

StudyCheck

.

They also examined 260,585 dissertations from 12,966 degree programs on the DART Europe portal for various digital-related keywords.

There were points for each of the four categories, which then made up the total number of points.

With the Technical University of Munich in 9th place (159 points), two universities from the Free State are in the top 10. Despite the good performance of these two universities, there is still “room for improvement” for the whole of Germany when it comes to digitalization.

There is still room for improvement in digitalization at German universities.

Also in Bavaria.

Popularity of universities on social media

When it comes to digital, social networks also have to be taken into account.

The LMU and TU Munich have the most followers across all platforms, i.e. Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn and Xing (as of January 26th).

Only when it comes to TikTok followers do the two state capital universities have no chance against the University of Regensburg.
