Traditionally on Candlemas, the annual district farmers' day took place on Friday in the Andechs monastery inn.

The main speaker was MEP Ulrike Müller.

There was praise for the solidarity among farmers and for the peaceful conduct of the protests.

Andechs - Behind the farmers from the district and nationwide lies an exciting time marked by protests.

There were many familiar faces in the hall at the annual district farmers' day, which traditionally takes place on Candlemas in the Andechs monastery inn.

District chairman of the Bavarian Farmers' Association for the Starnberg district, Georg Holzer, led the event.

The first speaker was the mayor of Andechs, Georg Scheitz.

He emphasized: “You are not alone” – and thus addressed the peasantry.

“It is now a situation in which we are being noticed again.

It is important that we stick together.” By this he meant, among other things, the planned cuts in subsidies for agricultural diesel and the associated farmer protests.

District Administrator Stefan Frey was also a guest.

According to him, the day was largely dominated by protests.

There is a lack of appreciation for the profession, he said.

“The cuts in agricultural diesel were really just the icing on the cake.

You were loud and unmistakable – everywhere in this republic.” Frey also praised the organization and the peaceful conduct of the protests.

We are decent, loud, but peaceful and fair.

And we will not allow ourselves to be pushed to the right-wing fringe.

District chairman Georg Holzer about the farmers regarding the protests

Holzer summarized that the past year 2023 was “reasonably good” for dairy farmers.

However: “It was a complete catastrophe for the agricultural farmers.” He was referring, among other things, to the drought.

The district chairman also emphasized that the profession must continue to stick together so well.

“We are decent, loud, but peaceful and fair.

And we will not allow ourselves to be pushed to the right-wing fringe,” he emphasized regarding the nationwide farmers’ protests.

The main speaker at the district farmers' day was European MP Ulrike Müller (FW).

The 61-year-old originally comes from the Allgäu and is a farmer herself.

The politician currently holds a dual mandate.

In addition to her mandate in the Bavarian State Parliament, which she has had since October, she will exercise her mandate in the European Parliament until the end of the electoral period on June 30, 2024.

Ulrike Müller: “At the moment it is not the case that Europe can afford to feed its population”

“I know that last year was a very difficult year.” Müller began her speech with these words and also praised the way the farmers’ protests went.

“The farming community has become a unique representative for many areas.” The traffic light government, on the other hand, is on the wrong track and is deepening the rifts in society, according to the politician.

However, the farming community is an anchor of stability in society - especially in rural areas.

“At the moment it is not the case that Europe can afford to feed its population,” the politician said.

From their point of view, the global structure has become massively out of joint.

“We are losing 1,000 farms a day at European level,” complained Müller.

This is one of the reasons why she demanded that the farming families take the public “much more proactively” with them.

“Biodiversity only works with farmers who work every day,” the MEP also said.

“The current agricultural policy has been discussed, it has been exhausted.” But she also emphasized that it is important that farmers do not close themselves off to new technologies, but are open to them.

“I can be unpleasant and I can offend, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in political discourse,” said Müller at the end.

Last but not least, there were a few awards.

Among others, two farmers from Andechs became champions this year: Simon Schaumberger and Xaver Frey.

Xaver Frey is the son of the district farmer Sonja Frey.
