VfB leads 2-0 early in the national duel and plays in the majority for more than 70 minutes.

But the SC resisted for a long time.

Stuttgart's Deniz Undav is once again the outstanding man.

Freiburg - Two quick goals and an early dismissal paved the way for victory for VfB Stuttgart in the national duel at SC Freiburg.

The Swabians deservedly won 3-1 (2-1) against Baden on Saturday.

With their second competitive win this year, Stuttgart underlined their status as the current number one in Baden-Württemberg and further consolidated their Champions League place in the Bundesliga.

Once again in top form, striker Deniz Undav (3rd minute), national player Chris Führich (7th) and full-back Maximilian Mittelstädt (74th) scored for VfB in front of 34,700 spectators.

For Freiburg, where offensive man Merlin Röhl was shown a red card for a foul in the 18th minute, defender Lukas Kübler scored the next goal (45th + 11th).

In the final phase, SC captain Christian Günter celebrated his comeback after a long injury break.

A wonderful through ball from Waldemar Anton exposed the entire Freiburg defense after less than three minutes and gave the guests a dream start.

Undav, a triple goalscorer in VfB's furious 5-2 win against RB Leipzig last week, was unstoppable and hit the ball flat into the left corner.

The attacker has now scored 13 goals in the first 17 Bundesliga games of his career.

The last German player to achieve this was Horst Hrubesch.

In 1975/76 he even scored 14 goals after 17 appearances.

As they celebrated, the Stuttgart team presented a jersey from their injured teammate Dan-Axel Zagadou, for whom the season was over.

During the warm-up they had already worn jackets with the Frenchman's number and nickname on their backs.

The quick lead was quickly followed by VfB's second goal.

Führich marched off on the left wing, played a one-two with Undav and coldly sank the ball.

In the past, Freiburg had never been 2-0 down in a Bundesliga home game.

And things got even worse for the SC.

Röhl caught his opponent Mittelstädt unfortunately but violently on the ankle and was shown a red card after a video review.

Another setback for Freiburg, whose coach Christian Streich then first discussed it with his Stuttgart colleague Sebastian Hoeneß and shortly afterwards was given a yellow card for complaining.

Given their chances, VfB could have improved long ago.

Numerous interruptions - including fans throwing objects onto the pitch in protest against the German Football League's investor plans - ensured that the game became increasingly disjointed.

Deep into added time in the first half, Kübler headed in a corner from Vincenzo Grifo to make it 1-2 and bring Freiburg back into the game.

At the beginning of the second half it was back and forth - including good chances.

The bravely fighting Breisgauers didn't notice at this stage that they were playing with one less man.

In the 73rd minute, Freiburg veteran and full-back Günter made his first appearance in almost half a year to great applause from the stands.

But Mittelstädt nipped the euphoria in the bud and, after another assist from Undav, scored to make it 3-1 for VfB, who had already won the first leg 5-0.

The SC never gave up, but suffered their second defeat in a row.
