There is evidence that the parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Perchting burned twice within four years.

It was reopened in 1774, 250 years ago.

The parish dedicates an entire year of celebrations to this event.

Perchting – It was an inferno.

When a fire broke out in a building in Perchting on April 14, 1768, the flames spread so quickly that four large farms, seven Sölden, the rectory and the parish church of the Visitation burned down within a few hours.

“The fire was devastating.

“It was probably based on a bakery,” explains city priest Dr.

Andreas Jall in conversation with Starnberger Merkur.

A brochure from the parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary says: “As a result of carelessness in a cottager's property, a fire broke out which caused devastating destruction in the village.” It would take six years before services could be celebrated again in 1774.

The parish is dedicating an entire year of celebration to this anniversary.

The fire of 1768 also caused immense damage to the church - most of it had to be rebuilt.

“The pastor at the time, Andreas Peyrlacher, lost his belongings in the fire.

He actively helped with the reconstruction,” says Jall.

At that time the material, including the stones, was very expensive, but not the handcraft.

“Whatever you could afford as a village church, you did.” As early as 1764, lightning struck the church tower of the village church.

Although the building suffered damage as a result, “there was no question of the church burning down to its foundations,” it says in the parish booklet.

“We know that real church services have taken place again since 1774,” explains Andreas Jall, emphasizing: “It wasn’t a re-dedication.” The church would only have had to be rededicated if it had burned down completely.

With regard to the 250th anniversary of the reopening, the Perchting parish council had the idea of making it a year of celebration.

In keeping with the anniversary: the church choir celebrates its 20th anniversary

“I spent a lot of time on the phone planning,” reports Ursula Kositza.

She has been on the five-member parish council since 2014 and has been its chairwoman since 2022.

It is fitting for the anniversary that the Church Choir of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

What is also special is that the meditation usually takes place in Hadorf, but this year it takes place in Perchting.

Jall admits that the parish church urgently needs to be renovated again.

“The moisture hangs in the corners, a lot of soot has accumulated over the decades and the electrical system is outdated,” he lists.

The electrics date from 1960, when the church was last restored, adds sexton Florian Zerhoch.

Jall: “However, the diocese has to save ten percent in its budget.

This will be done in the construction budget.”

Non-profit projects would also suffer from the increased number of people leaving the church and the resulting decline in church tax revenue.

For example, there is a lack of money for the seniors' meeting.

“In the future, you will have to make financial decisions on a smaller scale,” says Jall – probably also when it comes to building maintenance.

The highlights of the festival year will be a large church procession on June 30th and a celebratory service with Auxiliary Bishop Florian Wörner.
