Double-digit temperatures in the middle of winter – that is unusual for Munich, even in times of climate change.
And the trend shows: it will be even warmer next week.
Munich – Meteorologists use “midwinter” to describe the statistically coldest days and weeks of the year.
And these are - statistically - in the month of January and last until mid-February.
“The average temperatures are then between -0.36 and 0.29 degrees,” explains qualified meteorologist Simon Trippler from the German Weather Service (DWD).
These are the Germany-wide average values.
Far too warm and even warmer: lots of sun and above-average temperatures await all Munich residents over the next few days.

In the middle of winter: Munich values are 15 degrees above average temperature
For Munich, the metropolis on the edge of the Alps and at an altitude of 500 meters, the average values are significantly lower.
The current temperatures in the state capital are all the more sensational.
Because they are not only reliably in the plus range, but also at a significant distance from the zero degree limit.
22 degrees in Lisbon, thaw in Scandinavia and the Baltics.
Across Europe it is unusually warm for this time of year.

Spring weather in Upper Bavaria: It is far too warm throughout Europe
Of course, it's not just Munich that is affected.
The whole of Europe is caught in a persistent warm phase.
In Portugal it is already 22 degrees in early summer, but there is also a thaw in the far north as far north as Finland and the Baltics.
This constant current from the southwest is to blame, which has actually been causing miserable autumnal weather since the beginning of November.
Except for individual snow chaos and ice chaos outliers.
Mighty high Frank pushes into southern Bavaria, with low foothills in the north

To the north lies a strong low that is raging over Norway as hurricane “Ingunn”.
The air mass boundary between strong highs and strong lows lies exactly over Bavaria.

Up to 15 degrees can be reached in Munich next week – with clear blue skies
In the middle of the meteorological peak of winter, the mixed situation leads to rarely spring-like temperatures in Munich, which, by the way, will already have the most hours of sunshine in Germany in January 2024.
Up to 10 degrees await us in bright sunshine at the weekend.
Looking at the temperature forecast for next week, highs of 15 degrees could even be reached by Thursday.
A little further north it is also much too warm, but significantly more humid.
North of the Danube the low foothills predominate.
It is cloudy and rains a lot.
In isolated cases there is a risk of continuous rain.
This dichotomy could last until the end of next week.
In summary, there is bad news and good news - the bad news: Winter is over for now without really starting.
The good news for everyone in Munich and southern Upper Bavaria: early spring can be spent much more pleasantly in the south than north of the Danube.
