While a new crack seems to be forming around the figure of Javier Milei, a
survey
reveals a particular fact.
Logical, but still surprising in a context of so much polarization.
There is an issue on which libertarian, Kirchnerist and Macrista voters agree, and that works as a warning for the Government:
Argentina's main problem for the majority is (continues to be) inflation
.
This is confirmed by the latest study by the
University of San Andrés (Udesa)
, which publishes a
"Political Satisfaction and Public Opinion Survey"
every two months .
Between January 9 and 16, they surveyed
1,007 cases throughout the country
and presented the results with +/- 3.15% margin of error.
Clarín
advanced part of this report, with a very topical topic: what people supported and what they rejected regarding the Omnibus Law, which provides for a profound Reform of the State.
But in addition to the current situation, Udesa
's work
regularly addresses the
"main problems of the country
. "
Concern for everyone
"What would you say are the main problems affecting the country today?"
, says the survey.
People can choose several options and from their responses two tables are put together: one with the
first mention/concern
and then with the
totals
.
In all cases, inflation always remains high. This logic began to be installed from the second government of Cristina Kirchner. During the first, "insecurity" often appeared at the top.
But the rise in prices in the second term of the leader of the Frente de Todos
pushed inflation upwards in these rankings
.
Then, with Mauricio Macri, he continued there: the former president of Cambiemos doubled the inflation numbers he received from Kirchnerism, despite the fact that during the campaign he assured that it would be easy to combat this scourge.
And if Macri's thing in that sense was bad,
Alberto Fernández + Cristina + Sergio Massa's thing was directly horrible
.
They left power with annual inflation above 200%.
Thus, it is logical that at the start of Milei the price increase continues to be at the top of the "main problems."
Without taking away responsibility from the libertarian, who
poured his own gasoline on the problem
.
December (a third was Massa's and the rest his) ended with 25.5%.
And January looks slightly lower.
The
benefit of the doubt for the new management
is to see if this step back is justified for a consolidated takeoff of the economy and a stabilization of prices.
Open but short-term credit.
With this trajectory of inflation in the last administrations, it is understandable why when
Udesa
asks about the problems that affect the country, 27% mention it as a first option and 57% name it at some point.
Other related economic/social problems such as
poverty
or
low salaries
are far behind , with
10% as the first mention.
No crack with prices
When the results of the survey are discriminated according to the vote in the last election, differences are seen
with insecurity, corruption, justice or the level of salaries
.
But
not with inflation
.
It is the first mention/concern for 32% of Macristas, 28% of Libertarians and 26% of Kirchneristas. When the total mentions are detailed, they rise to 61%, 58% and 57% respectively.
This information leaves a
clear warning to Milei
.
Beyond the slogans of freedom or caste, if it does not solve the problem of inflation it will be difficult for it to sustain a majority support of public opinion.
Regarding the latter, this survey and others have shown an interesting coincidence: the opinions of libertarian voters and Macristas are very similar.
It is the support that Milei obtained in the runoff and that she seems to keep for now.
Everyone's big question is until when.
And
that is where inflation will surely play a fundamental role
.
