Since the beginning of this school year, the Christian Morgenstern School in Herrsching has been the first elementary school in the district to host a so-called FSJler, a young volunteer who supports lessons, especially in the first grades.

Headmaster Katharina Casper no longer wants to be without this support.

Herrsching

– FSJ is the abbreviation for “Voluntary Social Year”, which, among other things, offers young people between the ages of 16 and 26 the time to try out a social professional field.

Korbinian Drexler (17) wanted exactly this and, as a Herrschinger, was happy that an opportunity for this arose at the Christian Morgenstern Elementary School.

He, too, once went to school as a little boy on Martinsweg.

He now has his secondary school leaving certificate under his belt and, at around 1.90 meters tall, he has difficulty sitting on the small chairs of the first graders for long periods of time.

“We had wanted a FSJ student for a long time,” says school principal Katharina Casper.

She and social worker Monique Nieuwenhuis were all the happier when they were offered a position through the Bavarian Economy Vocational Training Center (BFZ) in Munich.

This is largely financed by the Do it initiative, under whose umbrella the Herrschinger Tafel is also located, and partly by the school authority, the municipality of Herrsching, explains Casper.

And this apparently works so well that the headmistress hopes that the project will be continued next school year.

On Friday she proudly presented the support and reported on her experience after the first six months with a FSJ student.

“We have had a changed class structure since 2015,” explains the headmaster.

“It's no longer the lessons we used to have.” Many children don't know German at all or only speak it poorly or are traumatized.

“Many actually need one-to-one care,” she says.

But a single teacher cannot do this.

Korbinian Drexler proved to be the ideal choice.

“The children love him,” says Katharina Casper.

In class, he has a de-escalating effect by going to the door with a student if necessary to calm him or her down while the lesson can continue.

But mainly he helps with homework.

“Playing football with Korbi is very popular among the students,” says the headmistress.

Since the 17-year-old has been at school, the bus supervision has also been working.

“If he’s there, there won’t be any trouble.”

Korbinian Drexler graduated from school last summer.

When his mother found out about the advertisement for a voluntary social year, he was happy, he says.

Especially since he doesn't yet know exactly where his professional journey will take him.

But after six months at school, he can say with certainty: “It won't be working with children.” As much as he enjoys the task, it is also exhausting, he says.

He currently looks after children in the first, second and two fourth grades.
