Numerous residents were injured in a fire in an apartment building in Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
Investigations into the cause are now underway.
Osterholz-Scharmbeck - A total of 22 people were injured, some seriously, in a fire in an apartment block in Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
According to initial findings, two people are in mortal danger, as the police announced on Sunday morning.
The cause of the fire initially remained unclear.
The fire brigade and police received several emergency calls late on Saturday evening due to heavy smoke in the affected apartment building.
In addition, several residents - especially on the upper floors - were trapped in their apartments.
Firefighters rescued some of those affected from their balconies using turntable ladders.
According to the police, one of the two critically injured residents - a 43-year-old man - had to be flown to a special clinic.
According to current information, three other people were seriously injured and 17 people suffered minor injuries.
More than 100 firefighters as well as 25 ambulances and five emergency doctors were deployed because of the fire.
After about an hour the flames were extinguished.
The building was no longer habitable for the time being.
City representatives took care of temporary accommodation for the residents.
The police have started investigating the cause of the fire and are therefore asking possible witnesses to come forward.
