On Sunday, a driver broke through a guardrail with his car on Autobahn 3 near Lohmar and fell into the Sülz River.
The vehicle remained upside down in the water.
Rescuers rescued the 25-year-old driver with life-threatening injuries and a seriously injured 26-year-old passenger from inside, a police spokesman said on Sunday.
Lohmar - The car had previously been driving towards Oberhausen and, for reasons that were initially unclear, veered to the right and fell down an embankment into the river.
According to the information, the driver had to be resuscitated and was taken to a university hospital.
