Many people only know Mallorca through Ballermann.

The island has so much more to offer - from picturesque villages to underground lakes to impressive mountain ranges.

1 / 10When traveling to Mallorca, a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, known by the locals as La Seu, should definitely be on your to-do list.

The sacred building is one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals ever - it was rebuilt after an earthquake by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, who is also known for the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and cast into its current form.

The play of light within the cathedral, created by the colored glass pieces of the rose window, is particularly impressive.

2 / 10The famous viewpoint at Cap de Formentor in the northeast of the island offers a beautiful view of rugged rocks and blue sea.

Access to the headland is now restricted to private drivers in summer - but the coastal route with its serpentines up to the lighthouse can be covered with a shuttle bus from Puerta Pollença.

If you want some peace and quiet while visiting, you should choose the off-season from October to April for your trip.

3 / 10The Coves del Drac (in Castilian “Cuevas del Drach”) are a 1.7 kilometer long cave system near Porto Cristo on the east coast of Mallorca.

According to a legend, Knights Templar are said to have hidden a treasure here that is guarded by a dragon - hence the name, which in German means something like “Dragon's Cave”.

Anyone who ventures in will be rewarded with the sight of impressive stalactites and stalagmites reflected in the water of the underground lakes.

You can even take a boat tour on the Lago Martel cave lake.

4 / 10The small town of Valldemossa is one of the most popular destinations for Mallorca holidaymakers.

It is located in the mountains on the northwest coast and impresses with its narrow streets that are reminiscent of bygone times.

The village has also gained fame through prominent guests such as the composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand, who once spent a romantic holiday here in the former Carthusian monastery.

The former kings of Mallorca also built a summer residence in Valldemossa.

5 / 10The northwest of Mallorca is characterized by the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain range from Calvia to Pollença.

Hiking fans will get their money's worth here - jagged rocks, hidden bays and original villages line the path.

The MA-10 panoramic road is particularly popular and is also suitable for more relaxed hikes.

The Serra de Tramuntana has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

6 / 10In addition to the cultural highlights, Mallorca is of course also a popular island for a beach holiday.

You shouldn't miss the 2.6 kilometer long natural beach Es Trenc in the south of the island.

Since it runs shallowly into the sea, it is considered extremely family-friendly.

The water is so clear that you shouldn't forget your snorkeling equipment.

There can be a lot going on here in high season, but a trip is usually worth it.

7 / 10The Castell de Bellver lives up to its name.

“Bellver” means something like “beautiful view”.

From the fortress, visitors have a great view of the Bay of Palma, the harbor and the peaks of the Tramuntana mountains, especially in the evening hours.

The castle dates back to the 14th century and is unique in Europe due to its round shape.

8 / 10In the Gardens of Alfàbia, or Jardines de Alfàbia, you can take a look at the Arab influences on Mallorca - the complex is even one of the most beautiful historical gardens in Spain, where the Moors demonstrated their gardening skills.

Even in midsummer, pleasant temperatures prevail here thanks to tall palm trees and the abundance of water gushing out of every corner.

The gardens are located between Palma and the town of Sóller.

9 / 10The Lluc Monastery, or in full “Santuari de Santa Maria de Lluc” is the most important place of pilgrimage for pilgrims on the island.

It is located in the middle of the impressive mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, about 500 meters above sea level.

The Black Madonna, which stands elevated behind the altar, is particularly revered here.

According to a legend, it was found on the bank of the stream by a shepherd boy named Lluc.

Today, many tourists are also drawn to the monastery - the monastery museum, the Calvary or the botanical garden are also suitable for visiting.

10 / 10Cala Agulla in the east of the island offers pure relaxation: it is located on the edge of a nature reserve, in the middle of mountains, dunes and forests.

The surrounding landscape is hardly developed, so you can enjoy nature to the fullest.

But action is still on offer, as pedal boats, surfboards and water skis can be rented on site.

For years, the Balearic island of Mallorca has been trying to limit party tourism and instead ensure more quality in the travel sector.

Because it has a lot to offer: Anyone who rents a car in summer can explore medieval fortresses, walk through picturesque mountain villages or end the day on one of the numerous beaches after a hike in the north of the island.

The possibilities are diverse – you just have to know them.
