Although the responsible city mayor, Jan Van Zanen, had banned the action, the activists were initially able to walk unhindered via the exit onto the motorway.
The police intervened after about 45 minutes, interrupted the demonstration and arrested numerous participants.
They were taken by bus to the stadium of the ADO The Hague football club and released there.
The evacuation took a long time because some demonstrators had stuck themselves to the asphalt.
According to the public broadcaster

, criminal investigations should be avoided.
The highway has now been cleared and opened to traffic.
Against fossil fuels: Climate activists in The Hague have been protesting for over a year
It is not the first time that climate activists have blocked the motorway in The Hague.
Last year alone, Extinction Rebellion staged dozens of protests to demonstrate against government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
In May, one of these blockades escalated and 1,500 participants were arrested.

The protests briefly ended in October 2023 because Parliament called on the government to present a plan to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.
Since this plan is not yet available, the activists demonstrated again.
“Extinction Rebellion” accuses the government of not keeping its promises.
