Protesters blocked the A12 in The Hague, around a thousand were arrested and driven away on a bus.

The Hague - In the Netherlands, protesters from the environmental group Extinction Rebellion blocked the A12 motorway in the center of The Hague on Saturday (February 4) to take a stand against fossil fuel subsidies.

Around a thousand people were arrested during the protest.

According to the public broadcaster

NOS,

criminal investigations should be avoided.

Stuck on asphalt: 1,000 climate activists arrested in The Hague

Despite an existing ban on the action, the activists were initially able to walk unhindered via the exit onto the motorway.

After about 45 minutes, the police interrupted the demonstration and arrested numerous participants.

They were then taken by bus to the stadium of the ADO The Hague football club and released there.

Because some demonstrators had stuck to the asphalt, the evacuation took longer.

The highway has now been reopened to traffic.

Motorway blockade in The Hague: Climate activists protest against fossil fuels

The reason for the protests is dissatisfaction with the government and the extraction of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

To protest against this, activists from “Extinction Rebellion” blocked the A12 motorway several dozen times last year.

During a blockade in May 2023, 1,500 people were arrested.

However, NOS

reports that something could change soon: the outgoing climate minister Rob Jetten is planning to present his proposals for reducing subsidies to parliament in the coming days.

He therefore asked the activists of “Extinction Rebellion” for “a few days of patience”.
