Once again there were impressive figures for the annual statistics of the Swabian fire department.
But there are also indications of potentially big problems soon.
Markt Schwaben –
The number for the evening is 10680. This is the sum of the operational and training hours that the members of the Markt Schwaben Volunteer Fire Department completed last year.
A number that is now at a fairly high level - and at the same time with a constant increase from year to year, as Second Commander Franz Kolbeck explains.
It is Kolbeck again who will present the fire department's annual statistics this evening on the sidelines of the fire department's annual general meeting.
In addition to the 3,788 hours resulting from 170 exercises, teaching and work assignments, the almost 6,900 hours that accrue from direct assignments are particularly important.
48 were used directly to fight fires, 154 were for technical assistance.
The first responder was out and about 229 times in the surrounding area and in the town of Markt Schwaben.
In total, there were 470 annual operations, in which, according to Kolbeck, 40 people were saved by fire brigade operations and 137 by the first responder.
In three cases it was no longer possible to help people in need.

Kolbeck emphasizes that the list of operations also includes 32 false alarms.

He can only speculate about the reasons.
The second commander suspects that a phase may be beginning in which the smoke detectors that were once installed as standard in living spaces have become weak in battery or are in urgent need of maintenance.

Kolbeck also used his presentation on statistics this evening to once again emphasize the good cooperation with the town hall and the district fire inspection.
He breaks a lance for the partners of the emergency services.
The burden on each individual is very high.
The fact that they are able to serve the public is largely thanks to these direct relatives and a well-functioning home environment.

91 women and men are currently active.
21 of them belong to the youth fire department.
Nevertheless, Franz Kolbeck and Commander Christian Hankofer see a major task this year in wanting to increase the number of personnel.
A big problem is the so-called daytime alert.
In other words, the number of available fire brigade personnel who can actually respond to operations immediately during the day if an alarm is raised.
“A sticking point,” says Kolbeck.
We are still relatively well positioned here, but it doesn't have to stay that way forever.
According to Kolbeck, the fact that things are still going halfway at the moment has to do with the fact that the number of firefighters who work from home at home has increased since Corona.
In the long term, it would be ideal if new staff could be recruited who, from a professional point of view, would be ready for action without any problems in the event of an emergency.

According to the deputy commander, three other focal points of the fire brigade's work this year are a revision of the so-called blackout plans, the switch to digital alarms expected this year and the further planning of the purchase of a new turntable ladder to replace the old turntable ladder from 1999. However, fire department circles do not expect delivery for three years at the earliest.
