They are tourist magnets and popular photo opportunities.
Ten of them are particularly iconic.
1 / 10There's no better city to start this list than New York City, the mother of all skylines.
In 1896, a skyline was first mentioned in connection with New York.
The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1972.
Today, One World Trade Center further back is the tallest building in the city.

The Petronas Towers are particularly well known, at 452 meters high they are the tallest twin towers in the world.

The CN Tower was the tallest television tower in the world from 1976 to 2010, at 553 meters high, until the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China surpassed it.
