On this winter morning, there is a biting, humid cold on the campus of Rohtak University, which gnaws at the limbs.

Hundreds of men between 20 and 40 years old congregate here and there.

Construction recruiters arrived from Israel where there are 10,000 positions to fill: carpenters, tilers, benders and plasterers.

The war with Hamas and the cancellation of Palestinian workers' permits have created a labor shortage.

The most populous country in the world has arms to spare.

“Tens of thousands of Indians showed up,”

notes Shay Pauzner, deputy director of the Israel Builders Association, which represents the interests of the sector.

“In total, 30,000 foreigners are expected to come in the coming months,”

he adds.
