This year cannot be said to be a success story: the artificial ice rink on Schongau's Marienplatz was not as well received this year as the city and business owners had hoped.

Schongau

- Yawning emptiness whenever you passed the mini ice skating stadium on Marienplatz.

Only the walking aids were available every day for the past three weeks.

But they also waited in vain for children who wanted to use them.

The mulled wine stall: closed.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

“It felt like a mother was there with her child every day,” says Thomas Schull from the neighboring “Mobili” in a sad assessment.

He imagined and wished it would be different.

Also because he was responsible for the mulled wine stall.

“I gave up after eight days.

There was nothing going on, so it just didn’t make sense,” says Schull with a shrug.

For him it was a pay-as-you-go deal

Nevertheless, he put the walkers on the artificial ice surface every morning and put them away again in the evening.

“That was my main activity.” Overall, despite the low rent for the place, it was a pay-as-you-go deal for him.

When asked why the ice arena, which was supposed to be an attraction to revitalize the old town, was not accepted this year, he has no answer.

“I’m at a loss.”

The other businesses around Marienplatz are in a similar situation.

“There was a lot going on here last year,” remembers Robert Kassebaum.

Ice hockey was often played there until the evening hours.

“Maybe there was just more ‘action’ on offer back then.”

Hermann Gleich from the Ballenhaus Bistro also shares this assumption.

“It's just not enough to just put something down and then do nothing more,” his criticism is also directed at the city of Schongau.

One person who provided some “action” last year is Max Becher from the Schongau Ice Skating Department (EAS).

Every Saturday he organized games for young ice hockey players and also advertised the ice arena for children's birthday parties.

“I couldn’t play the games this year because I’m very busy at work,” says Becher.

The bookings also went through him this year.

Two people registered: a children's birthday party and the kindergarten from Schwabbruck.

“I doubt whether they actually came because it rained quite a bit on the day we booked.”

Was it about time?

Was it the weather?

So is the weather to blame for the non-use?

“I think the timing is the problem,” speculates Becher.

January is not suitable for this.

“It would make much more sense to set it up immediately after the Christmas market and over the holidays,” he says.

The local newspapers in the Weilheim-Schongau district are represented on Instagram under “merkur_wm_sog”.

Second mayor Daniela Puzzovio also sees it that way.

She even goes one step further: “I would like it if we integrated the ice skating area into the Christmas market,” she thinks out loud.

Or set up in different locations over a longer period of time.

Because: “The arena should play a role in revitalizing the old town in winter.

Maybe with extras for the children and curling.” But someone would have to organize that.

Puzzovio definitely wants to sit down with everyone, find out the reasons for the failure and plan the whole thing differently next year.
