The last link before the trash

2024-02-04T18:11:18.572Z

Highlights: Every year in Germany, eleven million foods end up in the trash and are wasted. An environmental organization wants to put an end to this. The goal of food sharing: “to abolish yourself,” because if food is no longer wasted, no one has to save it anymore. You can create so-called food baskets or apply for one yourself. If there are larger quantities, the food sharers are happy to come and pick them up themselves. Anyone who would like to get involved can contact dachau@foodsharing.network.

Every year in Germany, eleven million foods end up in the trash and are wasted.

An environmental organization wants to put an end to this.

Dachau

– Every day, Birgit Baumer (61) from Dachau and Michaela Ban (49) from Schwabhausen drive to supermarkets like Edeka Schermelleh and bakeries like Bakery Denk in the area.

Not to shop.

The ambassadors of the Dachau local group of Foodsharing - in German: sharing food - pick up the leftover food and then distribute it to their friends, acquaintances or other interested parties.

It all started after the movie “Taste the Waste”.

It all started on December 12th, 2012: The Foodsharing organization was founded in Cologne based on the film “Taste the Waste”.

A lot has happened since then: What started in Germany spread quickly, and now there is food sharing in Austria, Switzerland and a few in Europe.

In the Dachau local group alone, 200 qualified volunteers are involved.

Everything is voluntary: “Everyone does it at their own expense to pick up everything and pass it on,” says Birgit Baumer.

“Food saving” itself usually goes like this: At the end of the week, supermarkets or businesses still have edible food left over that they would actually have to throw away.

Then you can contact the helpers at Foodsharing via email and arrange a pick-up appointment.

An emergency team is also ready if things have to happen quickly.

Food sharing itself comes after the food bank and charitable institutions and is therefore: “the last link before the garbage”.

There are no specific pickup times

The companies themselves don’t have to do much when it comes to collecting them; the so-called “food sharers” pack and load the food themselves.

There are no specific collection times: “We collect when it suits the company best.” After collection, the goods are distributed free of charge - in addition to acquaintances and friends, seniors, those in need and the Citizens' Meeting Café also benefit.

Michaela Ban herself also has a shelf in front of her front door in Schwabhausen where everyone can help themselves: “The whole town comes by and everyone can take what they want.” They also “saved” food at the Dachau Folk Festival ( we reported).

“Food sharing is aimed at everyone who wants to save food from the trash and who doesn’t want edible food to go to waste,” says Ban.

A good concept, because food sharing is intended for everyone, “including millionaires”.

The goal of food sharing: “to abolish yourself,” because if food is no longer wasted, no one has to save it anymore.

Food sharing is well on the way to achieving this, some companies have no food left when people come from food sharing, everything has been used, says Birgit Baumer.

You can create so-called food baskets

“You can also save food as an individual.” Whether you go on vacation and the fridge is still full or you had an event and half the guests didn’t come, it’s easy.

You can create so-called food baskets: These are “packages” or baskets with the food you no longer need.

It works like this: simply register on the food sharing website with your own email address and click on the basket symbol.

There you can either create your own basket or apply for one yourself.

If there are larger quantities, the food sharers are happy to come and pick them up themselves.

Anyone who would like to get involved themselves can qualify as a “collector”.

All you need to do is take a quiz about hygiene and then be “trained”: Experienced food sharers accompany the newcomers three times on so-called “introductory pick-ups”, where everything they need to know is explained.

Anyone interested can find out more at foodsharing.de or contact someone directly at dachau@foodsharing.network.
