Highlights: Weilheim secondary school takes a look into a possible future. Project partners for the event are the associations Multivision eV, Help - Help for Self-Help and Plant for Planet. They are concerned with possible implementation of a climate-neutral vision of the future by 2045. Cars, taxis, buses and trains would travel autonomously. Power lines, both underground and underwater, would carry green electricity across Europe. Heat from the sewers or the subway would also be converted into energy.

“Energy vision - How do we want to live?” This was the question that around 335 students at the Weilheim secondary school were recently confronted with.

The reason was a nationwide educational event for secondary schools in Germany.

Project partners for the event are the associations Multivision eV, Help - Help for Self-Help and Plant for Planet as well as the German Association of Cities and Municipalities.

They are concerned with possible implementation of a climate-neutral vision of the future by 2045.

Weilheim - “You are the future”: With these words began - after a welcome from Vice Principal Markus Kölsch and District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß - the presentation of the “Energy Vision” educational campaign, which was also organized by the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) and the Federal Association of Energy Companies. and water management (BDEW).

The presentation addressed the question of how it is possible for us as a society to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero and what the city of the future would look like.

Moderator Sebastian Saurle from the Multivision association pointed out that this project was designed for students: “So join in!”

Problems of today

In the beginning, the students were asked about the problems of today: climate crisis, electricity supply, food shortage.

“How,” Sebastian wanted to know, “do we as a community manage to overcome such problems?” A quiz provided information about the actual facts.

Questions like: “What percentage of the electricity in Germany already comes from renewable energies?” encouraged the students to participate.

The astonishing answer: 55.2 percent.

The restructuring of the power supply is a central factor for a successful energy transition.

future vision

Then a video followed.

The future vision of a city that received up to 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energies was shown here.

Cars, taxis, buses and trains would travel autonomously.

Power lines, both underground and underwater, would carry green electricity across Europe.

Heat from the sewers or the subway would also be converted into energy.

The moderator asked whether this was realistic.

The majority of the class decided that although the change was theoretically possible, it could not be “managed”.

Too many risk factors would prevent this.

“Where do all the resources for the materials come from” and “What happens in a complete blackout”?

These critical questions were asked by the students in relation to the video, to name just two.

People were sure: “We want reliability, we want to rely on our power grid.” Even now there are already power outages.

However, due to the broad network and the individual security precautions, a blackout would be very unlikely in the vision of 2045.

Finally, the students had the opportunity to try small, freeze-dried insects.

Two volunteered.

“It’s already in our food anyway” and “a bit like nuts” were the results of the two courageous people.
