The origins of the Estrella de Mar Awards
Every year,
Mar del Plata raises the curtain with the traditional official launch event of the season
, thus presenting the theatrical, cultural, musical and recreational offering of the summer.
The main personalities who are part of the show lineup attend.
This is why in the city of stars, recognition could not be missed for the artists and works that, due to their artistic, cultural and technical values, contribute to ranking each summer season in the city of Mar del Plata.
Now, what were the origins of these awards?
Read on to learn the story!
The great cultural offer
In 1975 the first Estrella de Mar awards ceremony was held.
In 1973, the authorities of the then Municipal Directorate of Tourism warned that theatrical activity had a fundamental importance within the tourist offer offered to visitors to the city.
Statistics indicated that daily, as many or more spectators attended theatrical shows than the central casino of Mar del Plata.
This is how in 1975, the first Estrella de Mar awards ceremony was held. A purely Mar del Plata award, dedicated to highlighting shows in all their aspects.
Mirtha Legrand is undoubtedly one of the figures of Mar del Plata and was awarded at the Estrella de Mar Awards.
The original statute established nominating Best Direction, Best Dramatic Work, Best Set Design, Actress and Leading Actor, and also Revelation of the Season.
The regulations also required the staging of original works whose debut had to take place in Mar del Plata, trying to encourage creativity and avoid reproducing during the summer season what had already been seen in winter on television programs.
Crossing borders
As the years went by, the award began to be desired by both artists and producers;
They saw in it a promotion for the presentation of that show in the winter in Buenos Aires or other cities.
Born then as a tourist promotional tool, it served to inform visitors of the most successful works presented, and to encourage producers and actors' cooperatives to join in with their proposals.
Carlitos Balá received a special tribute within the framework of the Estrella de Mar Awards.
The name
"Starfish Award"
was as obvious as the need for its realization.
An award intended for show stars who performed in our Mar, in Mar del Plata.
The first trophy was made by hand, molding an authentic starfish, later cast in bronze, all mounted on a simple polished wooden base.
One of the stars awarded as a revelation in the 1974-1975 season was the later famous singer María Marta Serra Lima.
China Zorrilla, artistic director of "Arlequino and his two patrons", was also one of the first Starfish that the commune had the honor of delivering.
Other winners of that season were Federico Luppi, Haydeé Padilla, Pepe Soriano, Gianni Lunadei, Osvaldo Pugliese, Juan Vitali and Dora Baret.
