A famous Giza pyramid is currently being restored in Egypt.

A video shows the project - apparently much to the annoyance of experts.

Cairo – The renovation work on the pyramid in Egypt has caused an outcry online.

The smallest of the famous Giza pyramids is to be restored.

The plan is to cover the Menkaure pyramid - which stands next to the Sphinx and the larger Khafre and Cheops pyramids - with granite blocks.

An Egyptologist vehemently criticized the plan.

quoted Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

In a video posted on Facebook on January 25, workers can be seen placing the granite blocks at the base of the pyramid.

The pyramid was originally encased in granite when it was built.

However, over time she lost her disguise.

The project aims to restore the original style of the structure by reconstructing the granite layers.

The work is expected to take around three years.

Waziri described the restoration as “Egypt’s gift to the world in the 21st century.”

“Why not wallpaper it?” – residents and experts criticize the restoration of the pyramid

However, not all Facebook users in the video are satisfied with the project and are annoyed that the original blocks of the pyramid will soon no longer be recognizable.

quoted numerous comments.

“When will the project to straighten the Tower of Pisa be planned?” asked one.

“Why not wallpaper the pyramids instead of tiling them?” read another comment.

Egyptologist Monica Hanna also expressed her displeasure.

“Impossible!” was their verdict.

“The only thing left was to tile the pyramid of Menkaure!

“When will we put an end to the absurdity in the management of Egypt’s heritage?” she asked indignantly.

The international principles on renovations would prohibit such interventions, explained Hanna.

She called on all archaeologists to “mobilize immediately.”

Preservation of cultural heritage in Egypt is hotly debated

This is not the first time that the preservation of cultural heritage has been discussed in Egypt.

Recently, the restoration of the 15th-century Abu al-Abbas al-Morsi Mosque in the port city of Alexandria was criticized.

The colored and decorated ceilings have been painted white.

There are pyramids not only in Egypt: King Charles also has his own pyramid in Scotland.

Meanwhile, a pyramid is being built in Bavaria that won't be finished for 1,160 years.
