If you believe many reports on the Internet, every pensioner receives 110 euros more in pension per child.

But it is not that simple.

Berlin - More and more pensioners are affected by poverty.

At the end of the first quarter of 2023, more than 684,000 people received basic security in old age, as the Federal Statistical Office announced.

Compared to December 2022, this is an increase of around 25,000 people.

Women in particular are affected by poverty in old age when they retire.

Most recently, six out of ten recipients of basic security in old age were female.

Those affected at retirement age can apply for help if their income is not sufficient to cover their living costs.

In this situation you are grateful for every additional euro.

110 euros more pension through child-rearing time: expert speaks of “nonsense”

There are reports circulating on the Internet that monthly salaries can be increased by 110 euros.

The portal gegen-hartz.de, on the other hand, speaks of a “retirement myth”, according to which all pensioners with children would receive this 110 euros more pension upon application.

“This is nonsense,” says pension expert and lawyer Peter Klöppel.

Then 20 million pensioners would immediately have more money.

Only one parent is entitled to the benefit for child-rearing time.

How do the 110 euros come about?

It's about the recognition of time spent raising children.

For a child born after 1992, the German pension insurance grants a child-rearing period of 36 months, i.e. three years.

There is one pension point for each year with a current pension value of 37.60 euros.

So you get three pay points for one child.

In total, that's around 110 euros more per month.

If there are several children, the amount increases accordingly.

110 euros more pension due to time spent raising children: Double allocation for pensioners is not possible

However, there are some restrictions, so not all pensioners can benefit from this benefit.

This means that the time spent raising children is only credited to one parent.

Double counting, i.e. adding the amounts for both parents, is not possible.

If you raise your child together, the mother is generally entitled to the child-rearing time.

However, if the father is to receive the child-rearing time, the pension insurance needs a joint declaration.

In addition, only two years and six months are recognized for children born before 1992.

This is the so-called mother's pension.

The additional benefit in the pension is correspondingly lower.

110 euros more pension through child-rearing time: non-biological parents can also benefit from this

Child-rearing periods are credited to biological parents in the same way as adoptive, foster or step-parents.

If grandparents or other relatives are raising the child, they are also entitled to have their child-raising time recognized.

In the case of same-sex parents, the biological parent receives the child-rearing time.

If both parents are not biological parents, the person who first adopted the child has a claim.

Anyone who raised a child born in 1992 or later and is generally entitled to a pension can actually have around 110 euros credited towards their pension.

However, not everyone is entitled to this benefit.

However, the receipt is not automatic; you must submit an application.

The application form can be downloaded here.
