An incident involving AfD member of the state parliament Ferdinand Mang's damaged backpack and leaky water bottle is causing a stir.

Nuremberg - The criminal police are investigating an incident that occurred during a meeting in Nuremberg, in which the backpack of AfD state parliament member Ferdinand Mang was possibly intentionally damaged.

According to the police report on Monday, February 5, Mang contacted the emergency services because water had leaked from a plastic bottle in his backpack that he had previously placed there.

However, it remains uncertain when and how the damage occurred and whether Mang was wearing the backpack at the time.

“When he picked up the backpack again after a while, he noticed the water leaking out.

He also stated that he could not rule out that the water leak was caused by unknown persons,” the police said in their statement.

The backpack and bottle were seized for examination.

It is now being determined “whether the leakage of water in the backpack can be attributed to criminal activity.”

However, the police expressly emphasized: “So far there have been no indications of a previous physical altercation with unknown persons.”

When asked on Monday, Mang said: “I carried the backpack throughout.

I just turned it off briefly before my speech to get my manuscript out.”

He only noticed the water leak a few minutes after his speech.

“Then I noticed that there was a small hole in the bottle, in the bottle wrap and in the backpack at the bottom where the bottle was lying.”

Controversy over the backpack of AfD members of the state parliament – “slashing” accusation only a draft

The AfD parliamentary group and its leader Katrin Ebner-Steiner presented the incident on Monday as if Mang had been “attacked” - but quickly withdrew a crucial point in their statement.

“An unknown person tried to stab him in the back with a sharp object,” said the first version of the press release.

A correction then said: “An unknown person most likely stabbed him with a sharp object behind his back.”

Ebner-Steiner and the parliamentary group did not initially respond to inquiries from the German Press Agency on what basis they based the accusation of an attack on Mang and a “stabbing”.

When asked why there was a second version of the press release shortly afterwards, Ebner-Steiner explained that the first version was only a draft.
