No surprises in the National Assembly.

The deputies rejected this Monday, since only 124 votes were recorded in favor of the motion of censure tabled by the left before Gabriel Attal's general policy speech before the Assembly on January 30.

It would have taken 289 votes to bring down the government.

Submitted jointly by the LFI, PS, environmentalist and communist groups, this motion of “no confidence” was intended to respond to the Prime Minister's choice not to seek a vote of confidence at the end of his speech, in the absence of an absolute majority at the end of his speech. the Assembly.

“To free oneself from the vote of confidence is to choose to deviate from the fundamental principles of a parliamentary democracy,” denounced the left in its motion.

The aim of this vote was also to show “who is in the majority and who is not”, confided an LFI deputy.

As a preamble to the vote, the Prime Minister attacked LFI, which he accused of responding to the government only with “blocking, blocking, blocking” which is their “only course”.

“With each of your personal attacks, you take us back to the 19th century.

There is no one more conservative than you in the political landscape,” Gabriel Attal told the LFI deputies.

The Prime Minister also joked about the "record speed of tabling a motion of censure", the left not having waited for his general policy speech before tabling the motion of censure.

“I will never let myself be intimidated”

“I will never let myself be intimidated,” also said Gabriel Attal, who affirmed that he would not “deviate from the course” of the government.

The Prime Minister made “three commitments”: “Always keep your door open for exchange and discussion” with the oppositions, “always respect Parliament and the debate of ideas” and “always respect our institutions”.

“Will you be there for the dialogue?

First to speak, the coordinator of France Insoumise Manuel Bompard accused Gabriel Attal of being “the gentle face of social brutality”.

“You break the State, you leave, you dirty the Republic, you leave with your clique, you defy parliament, parliament teaches you to respect it”, tackled Manuel Bompard, using the formulation used by Gabriel Attal during his general policy speech.

“You break, you repair, you dirty, you clean, you challenge authority, you learn to respect it,” said the Prime Minister.

The president of the group of PS deputies Boris Vallaud, for his part, called on Gabriel Attal to “leave”.

“You have just arrived, Mr. Prime Minister, and it is already time to leave,” he scolded, accusing him of being a “demagogue.”

“You are not a visionary, Mr. Prime Minister.

The right lets the threat loom

The motion, however, had little chance of being adopted given the reluctance shown by LR and RN deputies to vote for it.

The boss of the deputies of the far-right party, Marine Le Pen, had thus estimated that, because the motion had been “announced even before the speech” of the Prime Minister, it “discredited those who tabled it”.

“We will not vote on the motion of censure of the Insoumis.

Because we in no way share the vision of the Insoumis,” LR boss Éric Ciotti also announced.

The right is still threatening to table one of its own in the coming weeks or months, which would a priori have a greater chance of gathering sufficient votes.

Before Gabriel Attal, Élisabeth Borne had faced around twenty motions of censure, but none had received the sufficient number of votes.
