In 2023, Aspiag Service, concessionaire of the Despar, Eurospar and Interspar brands for Triveneto, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy, collected 385 tons of unsold food products in directly managed sales points in Friuli Venezia Giulia which were put back into circulation, allowing the preparation of over 850 thousand meals distributed to the most needy through a network of associations and charities.
The initiative, launched in the past, aims to combat food waste, combining environmental sustainability and assistance to people in difficulty.
Overall, in 2023 in the 5 regions in which it operates, Despar (Aspiag Service) recovered 1,460 tonnes of food, translating into over 3 million meals, involving all the brand's direct sales points.
In particular, in Fvg the overall quantity of recovered goods produced a decrease in company waste by 370 tonnes (equal to over 822 bins) and avoided the waste of over 1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions (increasing compared to 2022) and almost 800 thousand cubic meters of water, equivalent to 250 Olympic swimming pools.
For Fabrizio Cicero, Director of DESPAR Fvg, "the synergy with the Banco Alimentare Foundation, Last Minute Market and voluntary associations is not limited to contributing to the reduction of food waste, but is weaving increasingly solid ties with the communities in which we operate".
