The consequences are devastating: many of the apartments are no longer habitable.

Munich - A basement fire in an apartment building on Papinstrasse in Munich on Saturday afternoon, February 3rd, led to a complex and lengthy operation by the fire department.

The first caller reported heavy smoke coming from the basement of the building around 2:30 p.m.

While the first emergency services from the Munich fire department and the rescue service were on their way to the reported address, the Munich control center received so many more calls that additional units were immediately sent to Freiham Süd.

The entire street was enveloped in smoke: many residents had already left the building

The reports came not only from people in the affected building, but also from passers-by and residents of neighboring houses who noticed heavy smoke in and outside the fire.

When the first units arrived on scene, “the street in front of the building was covered in thick, black smoke,” as the fire department writes in the press release.

Many of the residents had already left the building.

The platoon commander immediately ordered all available firefighting forces into the basement with two C-pipes.

At the same time, two people had to be rescued using the turntable ladder.

The emergency services checked the stairwell and ensured that the smoke could evaporate.

After 40 minutes of intensive extinguishing efforts, the “fire out” message was given.

However, the operation did not end there.

Large areas of the basement and the building had to be checked because of the heavy smoke.

In some rooms, the measured values showed extremely high CO concentrations, which made extensive ventilation measures necessary.

Devastating consequences: main water pipe burst, electrics and heating partially broken

During the checks it turned out that the main water pipe had burst due to the fire and water was flowing uncontrollably into the basement.

The emergency service from the Munich municipal utility company was able to stop the flow and the emergency services pumped the water out of the basement.
