Split

This year, Venice tourists will have to pay an entry fee for a day visit - but for now only on 29 test days.

Sales have already started.

Venice has been suffering from the crowds of visitors for years - at peak times there are more travelers in the tourist hotspot than locals.

That's why the city council decided last year to impose an entrance fee for day tourists.

With this, Venice hopes to get under control the mass of holidaymakers who only pay a short visit to the city and then want to disappear immediately without supporting the local businesses.

Larger travel groups are therefore also prohibited from June 1st.

The entry fee is five euros per person and applies to all holidaymakers aged 14 and over who only spend one day in the city.

Anyone who has booked accommodation in the city area is exempt from this.

Since January 16th, tickets can actually be purchased at

.

A ticket is required between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., but initially only on 29 test days in spring and on summer weekends.

Days were particularly chosen when a high number of visitors were expected:

  • April 25th to 30th

  • May 1st to 5th

  • May 11th + 12th

  • May 18th + 19th

  • May 25th + 26th

  • June 8th + 9th

  • June 15th + 16th

  • June 22nd + 23rd

  • June 29th + 30th

  • July 6th + 7th

  • July 13th + 14th

No entry fee is required on the first weekend of June, as this is Italy's national holiday, Festa della Repubblica.

Exceptions to the Venice fee

Tourists do not need to buy a ticket if they want to visit the smaller islands.

These include Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant'Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, Sant'Andrea, La Certosa, San Servolo, San Clemente and Poveglia as well as the Lido including Alberoni and Malamocco.

Tourists who only stop in transit at the Piazzale Roma bus station, the parking lot on the island of Tronchetto or the Statione Maritime port are also exempt from the fee.
