Google's push towards generative artificial intelligence continues.

The company has rolled out new AI-powered features to the Google Maps navigation app in the United States.

The goal is to help users find interesting places through the use of large language models.

The AI will answer questions about restaurant or shopping recommendations, cross-referencing the information with more than 250 million locations and more than 300 million contributors.

Google says the feature will initially be available in the US, although the intention is to bring it to all major markets where the maps are present.

The arrival of generative AI in Maps makes sense, given that for years Big G has transformed the platform into something more than a simple navigation tool, bringing it closer to an app for discovering new places and attractions.

“Let's say you're visiting San Francisco and want to plan a visit to some vintage shops,” reads an official note from Google.

“Ask Maps what you're looking for, such as 'places with a vintage feel in San Francisco.' Our AI models will analyze Maps' rich information about nearby businesses and places along with photos, ratings and reviews of the community to give you reliable suggestions."

Early access to the new feature is currently underway for Local Guides, i.e. community members who contribute to enriching Maps with reviews, information and photos.
