Since January 13, French people in mainland France have had to pay a tax of 55 euros, compared to 32 euros previously. The Mauritian government is backpedaling by postponing this increase until February 14.

New twist in the application of the tax increase for traveling to Mauritius.

On January 13, the amount of the

Passenger International Fee

for a traveler coming from mainland France increased by 72%, going from 35 to 60 dollars (or 32 to 55 euros) for an adult and from 17.5 dollars to 30 dollars (i.e. 16 to 28 euros) for children aged two and over.

This increase is finally postponed until February 14, 2024, confirms to

Figaro

René-Marc Chikli, president of the Union of Tour Operating Companies (Seto).

The increase in this tax took tour operators by surprise.

Informed at the last minute of this decision, they were also required to pass it on retroactively to plane tickets already booked, with the airlines being responsible for collecting it.

However, “

as a general rule, this type of tourist tax does not apply to reservations already paid and only concerns future files

,”

René-Marc Chikli recently explained to Le

Figaro .

In addition, in the event of a price increase less than 20 days before departure, the additional cost is the responsibility of the tour operator and not the customer.

Questioned by French tour operators, the Minister of Finance and the Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius therefore decided to give them a few more days of respite.

From now on, the new tax amounts will apply to arrivals that take place from February 14.

For tour operators, a new problem remains to be resolved: obtaining reimbursement of the differential already paid for stays planned by this date.
