Since 2022, all old car and motorcycle driving licenses will be replaced by the EU-wide driving license card.

These deadlines exist - and that's what happens if you forget to exchange it.

District

– The “rag for life” has had its day.

Since 2022, all old car and motorcycle driving licenses that were issued before January 19, 2013 will be gradually renewed and replaced by the EU-wide driving license card by 2033.

The deadline for exchanging driving licenses for those born between 1965 and 1970 expired on January 19th - and it can be assumed that many of those affected missed the deadline.

One thing is clear: If you have missed the deadline for the exchange, you are now driving without a valid document and are committing an administrative offense, confirms district office spokeswoman Sabine Kirchmair: “It usually costs ten euros.” But unlike driving without a license, you are not committing a crime.

The district office cannot quantify how many due driver's licenses in the district have not yet been exchanged.

“Some applications are currently still being processed,” says Kirchmair.

“So far we have no data on how many driving licenses have not yet been converted despite the period having expired.”

Deadlines depend on the format and date of issue

The exchange and the associated deadlines depend on the format and date of issue.

For paper documents issued up to and including December 31, 1998, the year of birth is relevant.

The first deadline was July 19, 2022 for those born from 1953 to 1958. The groups from 1959 to 1964 had until January 24, 2023, while those born from 1965 to 1970 had to complete the exchange by January 19, 2024.

For holders who have a credit card-sized driving license issued between January 1, 1999 and January 18, 2013 inclusive, the date of issue is important.

The first exhibition years 1999 to 2001 must change by January 19, 2026, 2002 to 2004 have until January 19, 2027.

The holders of the really old driving licenses can exchange their licenses without any pressure.

Anyone born before 1953 can have until January 19, 2033 to exchange it - regardless of the date of issue or the format of the driver's license.

Good to know: The exchange is not linked to mandatory health examinations.

However, these can be ordered if physical deficits become apparent.

Those affected would then have to prove their fitness to drive.

No sanctions if the deadline has passed

Anyone who has missed the deadline and now comes to the district office to exchange does not have to fear any sanctions, says Kirchmair: “There are no additional fees or penalties.” The new driving license costs 28.60 euros.

There is also an additional 5.25 euros if you – voluntarily – want to have the new document sent directly to your home by post.

Alternatively, free collection remains at the district office's registration office.

You can apply for an exchange online, by post or via the relevant municipality without a personal visit, adds Kirchmair.

“But if you would rather have a personal conversation, then an appointment would have to be made.” This is possible online at www.landkreis-miesbach.de/Landkreis/Landratsamt/Mobilität/KFZ-Zuehrung.

In general, all age groups can exchange their old driving licenses at any time, even if there is still time for the exchange.

According to Kirchmair, the priority when processing is always the current period.

You can find even more current news from the Miesbach district and the Tegernsee region at Merkur.de/Miesbach.

If you check without a driving license during the exchange phase, during which the old driver's license is with the authorities, you don't have to fear any disadvantages, as the spokeswoman explains: "This process is of course known to the police and is tolerated accordingly."

However, there could be problems with expired driving licenses abroad, warns the ADAC.

If you are caught with the old document after the exchange period has expired, the warning could be more expensive than in Germany.
