Moosburg aid organization Navis is looking for an alliance with the fire department

2024-02-05T09:20:40.148Z

Highlights: Moosburg aid organization Navis is looking for an alliance with the fire department. Around 3,500 volunteer firefighters serve in the Freising district and are involved in firefighting and technical assistance on a voluntary basis. Navis was created after the relief operation in Sri Lanka after the tsunami in December 2004. There are plans for Navis and the fire departments to also work together in the district's disaster protection, for example in the drinking water treatment sector. The association is happy to offer training and education so that the helpers are equipped to use the special emergency equipment from Navis.

Blue light organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to find active members.

Navis from Moosburg is now breaking new ground - and thus back to its roots.

Moosburg

– The house number sounds high at first: around 500 members belong to the Moosburg aid organization Navis.

But appearances are somewhat deceptive: the number of active people is many times smaller - and the missions that Navis usually undertakes are not without their own.

After all, the association's rescue helpers are there when things get really bad - whether it's an earthquake, storm or flood disaster.

Press spokeswoman: “Navis is actually an initiative from the ranks of the fire department”

In order to organize additional forces, the aid organization is now reflecting on its roots.

“Navis is actually an initiative from the ranks of the fire department,” reports press spokeswoman Karin Alt. Navis was created after the relief operation in Sri Lanka after the tsunami in December 2004. This operation was carried out by the Munich airport fire department in cooperation with the fire departments of the neighboring districts .

Surprised by the great success of this aid campaign, some of the firefighters involved decided to set up their own aid organization, Navis, in order to be able to help even more effectively during disasters abroad.

3,500 FFW people are active in the Freising district

So it is not surprising that the membership initially consisted primarily of firefighters.

However, many helpers have now joined from other aid organizations or from medical and technical professions.

Around 3,500 volunteer firefighters serve in the Freising district and are involved in firefighting and technical assistance on a voluntary basis.

“They all want to help,” says district fire chief Manfred Danner with pride.

That's why he unreservedly supports an initiative by the aid organization Navis, which invites other firefighters to join and be trained for the special requirements of missions abroad.

After all, we have often worked well together.

He reminds us that a lot of equipment was made available from fire brigade stocks for Navis' relief operations in the Ahr Valley and in Turkey.

It is therefore only logical to come together when it comes to “manpower”.

At Navis, the well-trained firefighters could contribute their know-how.

Danner: “They all have technical training and know the operational structures.”

Cooperation in disaster protection planned

“We don’t want to poach anyone,” assure Navis chairmen Michael Gmach, Dr.

Thomas Geiner and Lars Boehlkau.

But there are plans for Navis and the fire departments to also work together in the district's disaster protection, for example in the drinking water treatment sector.

Synergy effects can be used here.

The Navis board and district fire officer Manfred Danner agree: If more firefighters were to get involved with Navis, it would be a big win for both sides.

The association is happy to offer training and further education so that the helpers are equipped to use the special emergency equipment from Navis.

The Navis board emphasizes that helpers from other aid organizations and interested parties who do not come from the blue light sector are of course also welcome at any time.
