The sign on a restaurant raises the question: how long can you still pay with cash in Munich's restaurants?

Munich – Visitors receive the information before they even enter the restaurant.

“Card payment only possible,” says a note clearly visible on Pho You’s window.

There is no longer any room for cash lovers in the Vietnamese restaurant on Barer Straße (Maxvorstadt).

Local in Munich no longer accepts cash: “There are guests who are disappointed”

“We have only been paying by card for four or five months,” explains a Pho You employee.

“This saves us work, time and money.” Since then, the entire process in the store has run more smoothly and billing has become less complicated.

“Everything is automatic in the system.

Having to keep getting change from the bank for the cash register also costs money and means additional effort.”

There is headwind from some guests.

“Sure, there are some who are disappointed,” says the Pho You employee.

Some turned back after they found out about the cash ban.

“Of course that’s not ideal, but we have to accept it.” The employee is certain: “In 15 years our model will be the rule.”

General trend in Munich?

“There are also service fees when paying by card”

Pho You in Munich is still the exception.

“We don’t yet see that cash is going away completely here,” explains Thomas Geppert, regional manager of Dehoga Bayern, when asked.

Smaller companies in particular are more cautious when it comes to a complete changeover.

“When paying by card, there are also service fees for the restaurants.”

However, the corona pandemic has increased the trend towards card payments.

“Many restaurateurs adapt to the wishes of international guests.

They now simply expect that they can pay by card.”

Geppert has difficulty making a long-term prognosis.

“But I don’t think cash will completely disappear from bars in the next few years.” You have to wait and see how guests’ requirements develop and adapt accordingly if necessary.

“Recently you couldn't pay with a card at any bakery.

Now it has almost become standard.”
