The patron day of the Bavarian Mountain Riflemen takes place in Lenggries on May 5th.

Preparations are in full swing.

There will be events for the entire population from May 2nd.

Lenggries – The captain of the Lenggries Antlaßschützenkompanie, Kaspar Reiser, speaks of a “huge honor” when he thinks about the patron day on May 5th.

Up to 5,000 mountain riflemen from all over Bavaria, representatives from Tyrol, Welsch-Tirol and South Tyrol as well as high-ranking politicians are expected.

Even if the preparations are very labor-intensive: “It inspires the whole town and the clubs.” It was only decided to apply for the event in 2022, reports Reiser.

Because there were no applicants for this year at the time, the confirmation from the Association of Bavarian Mountain Riflemen came quickly.

The last patron day in Lenggries was in 1994.

Big tattoo on May 3rd

The celebrations begin on Thursday, May 2nd in the tent on the festival site.

It's “Youth Day” and the Bayern 3 band is coming in the evening.

“That’s great because they advertise on the radio beforehand,” says Reiser.

The traditional Great Tattoo will be held on Friday, May 3rd.

During the ceremony, a wreath will be laid at the war memorial.

The flag delegations from all Isarwinkler companies are there.

When darkness sets in, there is a torchlight procession to the marquee.

In the evenings, the music of the Reichersbeur Rifle Company provides entertainment.

The special thing is that the hosts have also invited three rifle companies from the neighboring communities in Tyrol for this Friday, namely from Achenkirch, Vomp and Eben-Maurach.

“The idea came about at the Schwaz battalion festival in Terfens,” reports Reiser.

There we sat together and realized that we were neighbors, so to speak, “but we didn’t know each other,” says Reiser.

The idea of inviting the Tyroleans to the Patronage Day was quickly born.

“Stihl Timbersports” competition and a craft market on May 4th

On Saturday, May 4th, the focus will be on sports and crafts.

The “Stihl Timbersports” competition takes place in the marquee.

This is an extreme sports competition series in sport woodcutting in various ax and saw disciplines.

The highlight is the German preliminary round.

Otherwise there are show fights and amateurs can also take part.

You can register in the festival tent.

It starts at 10 a.m.

For Reiser, the “Stihl-Timbersports” competition is one of the highlights of the events.

“We are expecting up to 3,000 visitors.

That’s great for the marquee.”

There will also be a craft market there, where companies from agricultural machinery dealers to traditional costume shops will present themselves.

“We want to show what we have.” There is a bouncy castle for children.

Saturday ends with a performance by “Michael Maier and his brass band friends”.

The group won the preliminary round for the Grand Prix of Brass Music in Lenggries in 2018, and they still have fond memories, says Reiser.

This is how Patronage Day will take place on May 5th

Patron Day itself is celebrated on Sunday, May 5th.

The shooters are expected to arrive from 7:30 a.m., arriving by bus or train from all over Bavaria.

At 8:35 a.m. the line-up for the two church processions begins, which are grouped at the festival site (buses) and at the train station.

Everything is planned down to the minute, because the level crossing has to be clear for the regional train at exactly 8:47 a.m.

The celebratory service will take place on the meadow at Oberfeld behind the school.

It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will be celebrated by Pastor Josef Rauffer.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx is also invited, “but we have not yet received a confirmation,” says Reiser.

There is a joint procession back that leads past the VIP stand at the town hall.

60 guests of honor are invited, including Prime Minister Markus Söder, his deputy Hubert Aiwanger, State Parliament President Ilse Aigner, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann as well as the former Prime Ministers Horst Seehofer and Edmund Stoiber, but also Duke Franz of Bavaria and Duke Max in Bavaria.

Numerous preparations for the security concept

The people of Lenggries still have a lot of work to do: they not only have to put up the marquee, prepare the grandstand and the altar, but also discuss extensive traffic planning and coordination with the police, fire department and BRK.

There will be refreshment stations along the train route and toilet facilities will also have to be built.

But the starters are highly motivated: “Everyone is at full speed and excited about the time,” says Reiser happily.

By the way, the tent is not dismantled afterwards.

After a three-day break, the Bavarian Rural Youth took over to celebrate their 75th anniversary.
