"It is a request that we have supported with conviction from the first moment. The monasteries are an integral and active part of our identity. They are places that over the centuries have represented central elements of the life of the territories and of the Italian communities. Each monastery has been a beacon of culture that has transmitted a great history and, moreover, are treasure chests of art and beauty. For this reason it is necessary to support this aspiration."
Thus the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, at the end of the meeting held at the MIC on the UNESCO candidacy of the "Early Medieval Benedictine settlements in Italy".
In the "race" for recognition are the monasteries of Subiaco, that of Montecassino and then San Vincenzo al Volturno, San Pietro al Monte in Civate, Sacra di San Michele, San Vittore alle Chiuse di Genga, Sant'Angelo in Formis, Santa Maria of Farfa.
The candidacy project aims to testify, through the 8 complexes, the birth of the Benedictine phenomenon in connection with the evolution of religious architecture, with the transmission of knowledge in Europe.
The application process shared with the political bodies involves sending the complete dossier to Paris in 2026 for final evaluation in the 2027 World Heritage Committee.
