If I had opted for a song from the Benidorm Fest, I would never have chosen
Zorra
, even though it was my favorite.
The winner profile in the contests organized to represent Spain in Eurovision is usually one of the following:
a) Twenty-something from a good family wanting to be famous, supported financially by his parents while giving a speech about hard work (and mental health).
More information
Mary Bas, interpreter of 'Zorra': “We are not 20 years old.
“I sweat it all”
b) Twenty-something with a powerful and impersonal voice who, after several adventures in the world of entertainment, is taken in by a certain record company and turned into an assembly line product chosen to take a high-profile and
demodé
proposal to Eurovision.
c) Someone from
OT
d) All of the above at the same time.
This year everything seemed to indicate that one of these four options would be repeated.
Although Blanca Paloma won in 2023 – which, although not to my liking, did not completely fit into these assumptions – it was not expected that the Bronze Microphone would go to a group like Nebulossa.
They have been an atypical proposition from the beginning.
Couple around fifty years old with a “normal” job outside the entertainment world, fans of Manuela Trasobares, parents and outsiders to the multinational circuit.
They are Roxette set in a gothic mansion from
In
the
Disneyland of Love
.
What they had against them was being the public's favorites.
Other years left out were The Blue House, Vicco, Tanxugeiras, Rigoberta Bandini and John Cobra (for being grotesque) and Chimo Bayo (for misreading the rules).
If Nebulossa can be criticized for anything, it is the resemblance of
Zorra
to the song
Perra
(by Bandini).
Fortunately, live, without post-production involved, Mery Bas's voice is more personal.
I hope you continue using it in the future.
Will Zorra
be liked
in Eurovision?
I don't believe it.
Eurovision was originally planned as a way to launch new artists and sell records.
It has been entrenched for decades in an mannerism (I use this term in its primitive meaning) of
glitter
mascletá and bad songs.
I hope it's glitter and good songs again.
The triumph of proposals like those of Måneskin, Lordi, Eimear Quinn, Loreen (the first time) or Sobral make me think that perhaps
Zorra
will be appreciated.
If not, it will be good news to see a group like Nebulossa carve out a well-deserved niche in the summer festival market.
