The National Assembly rejects the first motion of censure against Gabriel Attal

Highlights: The National Assembly rejects the first motion of censure against Gabriel Attal. Only 124 voted favorably for this motion, which required 289 votes, or more than half of the elected representatives of the Lower House, to bring down the government. The deputies from both camps did not make any appearances. The rejection of this motion was predictable. But in no way prejudges the possible fate of similar texts which could be submitted in the coming months. As soon as they get the government, they will bring it down. We will have to be very attentive.

In an almost empty Hemicycle, the Prime Minister defended himself against a motion of censure tabled by the left-wing oppositions. A text that the deputies of the National Rally nor those of the Republicans did not support.

The first motion of censure of the Gabriel Attal era will not have moved the crowds.

This Monday morning, the text, tabled by the 146 rebellious deputies, socialists, ecologists and communists, was largely rejected by the National Assembly.

There was hardly any suspense.

Already last week, after the tabling of this text by the left-wing oppositions, the National Rally and the Republicans did not hide their desire not to vote for this text.

For different reasons, the RN preferring to procrastinate and see the future projects of the new government, when the LR deputies, very upset against the executive, are increasingly thinking of tabling their own motion.

The deputies from both camps did not make any appearances.

In the Hemicycle, this Monday morning, only one LR deputy (Fabrice Brun) is present when Gabriel Attal gives his speech.

On the RN side, none.

The other ranks are not much fuller.

While Manuel Bompard (LFI) speaks to demand censorship from the government, only ten of his Insoumis colleagues are there to listen to him speak.

Its group president, Mathilde Panot, is not even present.

Environmentalists, socialists and communists, are even fewer.

“There are more ministers than parliamentarians

,” laughs a journalist in the press gallery.

“You are the gentle face of social brutality”

Meanwhile, the left attacks.

“Mr Prime Minister, everyone knows that you are only obligated”

, snaps the Insoumis Manuel Bompard.

Before continuing:

“You are the gentle face of social brutality.

We must censor you in order to ensure that the general interest prevails rather than the individual

.

The socialist Boris Vallaud, for his part, believes that Gabriel Attal

“already has a bad record”

.

“You are not a prime minister, you are a demagogue,”

he tells him, before reproaching him for not listening to him while he is speaking.

On the bench of ministers, Gabriel Attal is indeed busy.

He jokes with his colleagues Rachida Dati (Culture) and Marie Lebec (Relations with Parliament) while Boris Vallaud continues to question him.

A little earlier, the new head of government was on the podium, promising to

“respect Parliament”

and

“its speakers”

, then advocating

“respect for everyone for the proper conduct of debates”

.

He was then widely insulted by left-wing deputies.

“It is you who are blocking France”

,

“You should be ashamed of your arrogance”

, for example, tells him the Insoumis Alexis Corbière.

“I had not even given my directions on the occasion of my general policy declaration when you had already submitted your text as if all that mattered was the little political move

,” also criticizes Gabriel Attal.

A rejection and questions

The speeches then follow one another quickly.

Quite rarely, the Republicans, who were to express their position on this motion of censure, did not even speak, due to lack of a speaker.

The environmentalist Benjamin Lucas regrets the

“compass”

of the Prime Minister

“elevating opportunism as a method of government”

.

MP Marie-Agnès Poussier-Winsback (Horizons) is ironic about the

“creativity”

of the left:

“You invented preventive censorship!

No need to wait for the first announcements and the first acts

.

Before Jean-Philippe Tanguy (RN) heavily burdened the executive.

“You broke France, Marine Le Pen will repair it”

.

The rejection of this motion was predictable.

But it in no way prejudges the fate of possible future similar texts which could be submitted in the coming months.

A Renaissance deputy anticipates:

“We have definitely lost the LRs.

As soon as they get the chance, they will bring down the government.

We will have to be very attentive

. ”
