Like a game of dominoes, these small businesses close one after the other, after having sprouted like mushrooms in the shadow of HLM bars or in the heart of this France of sub-prefectures, that of the “corner death” and those left behind.
Oriental grocery stores, kebab restaurants, hookah bars, barber shops and now nail salons, electronic cigarette shops, phone repair shops... many are scraping by.
Their lifeless windows say a lot about the almost ghostly nature of their activity, raising suspicion of trafficking, and their signs, sometimes very conspicuous, provoke the exasperation of local elected officials who fear for the image of their municipality.
Some no longer hesitate to point the finger at these well-established businesses which, according to them, are linked to “kingpins” wishing to launder money from drug trafficking.
