Artificial intelligence is on the rise - and Bavaria wants to be at the forefront of the global “race for the brightest minds” in research.
Munich - Bavaria is planning to create 100 additional research positions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in the next few years - spread across the entire Free State.
Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) announced this on Tuesday, February 6th, after a cabinet meeting in Munich.
The funding for 50 positions will be provided by the state government, while the remainder will be provided by the respective universities.
Implementation of the announcement: AI university in Middle Franconia – Bavaria in the race for the “brightest minds”
In addition, on Tuesday the Council of Ministers officially decided to implement what Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) had already announced in a government statement at the end of last year.
For example, there are plans to found a complete AI university in Nuremberg.
“We are now starting to implement it,” says Blume.
Bavaria aims to play a leading role in the global “race for the brightest minds,” he emphasized.
According to Blume, more than 130 new AI professorships are already planned as part of the so-called “High-tech Agenda”.
Furthermore, it is planned to set up their own AI computer infrastructure for Bavarian universities.

Quantum computer “made in Bavaria”?
The Bavarian vision
The state government also has the vision of a quantum computer “made in Bavaria” as well as its own Bavarian AI base model.
“Some kind of BayernGPT, or in Franconian a FrankenGPT,” commented Blume, referring to the already well-known ChatGPT.
Another goal of the state government is the rapid implementation of artificial intelligence in medium-sized companies and craft businesses.
“AI will find its way into every company and ultimately into every private household,” predicted Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters).
Promoting nuclear fusion research is also on the agenda, including through an expert commission with around a dozen experts and a training offensive in nuclear technologies at universities.
The desired end goal is to build a demonstration nuclear fusion power plant in Bavaria.
