As a tabloid presenter, Katja Burkard has had to report on many strokes of fate in her life.

She especially remembers the day Lady Di died well.

Cologne – In the spring of 1997, Katja Burkard (58) started working for the tabloid magazine “Point 12”.

Just a few months later she had to report on one of the headlines of the year: the tragic accidental death of Lady Diana (†36).

At the “Kölner Treff” the presenter remembers how she experienced the anniversary of the death of the Princess of Wales.

At that time, Katja Burkard was still relatively early in her career as a presenter.

One moment in particular from August 1997 remains in her memory.

“We were at the International Radio Exhibition in Berlin and actually wanted to broadcast from the IFA on Monday,” says the 58-year-old in an interview with guest presenter Wayne Carpendale (46).

In the evening she and her team attended a boxing match by Axel Schulz (55).

When everyone was standing in a “comfortable atmosphere” it happened.

“Then someone said: 'Lady Diana is having an accident and she might die,'” Burkard remembers the moment.

At first everyone reacted in disbelief and couldn't really take the news seriously.

“And then there was confirmation,” Burkard continued in the interview.

“Suddenly everyone was wide awake.” The shock was so deep that even the routine rehearsal and lighting procedures were thrown overboard.

On Sunday morning at eight o'clock Katja Burkard finally went on air reporting on Lady Di's tragic car accident.

An emotional challenge for the RTL veteran.

After initially reporting on the plane accident, in which a school class had also died, she went to the dance studio.

“But I was sitting there, I hardly knew what my name was anymore, let alone how to walk a waltz,” the presenter revealed in the conversation.
