A federal appeals court on Tuesday rejected former President Donald Trump's claims about his supposed immunity from being put on trial for the alleged criminal acts he committed when he was president and attempted to reverse the results of the 2020 election, a chain of events that led to in the assault on the Capitol on January 6.
Trump will almost certainly appeal immediately to the Supreme Court in an attempt to prevent the trial from taking place in March, as planned.
The court could make a quick decision on the case and could speed up any ruling.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that there was no basis for Trump to claim that former presidents have blanket immunity from any act committed as president.
It is one of four criminal cases facing Trump, who nevertheless remains the favorite to win the Republican presidential nomination.
