They noticed it from the docks of the Marina Grande port in Procida swimming disoriented and shortly after arriving on shore, in the shipyard area, until it washed ashore: it was a specimen of kingfish, weighing over 45 kilos.
The kingfish (scientific name Lampris guttatus) is a species widespread mainly in temperate and tropical waters although it has been spotted in many seas around the world;
in the Mediterranean, sightings are rather rare and in Italy generally sporadic.
The kingfish usually lives in open waters and at depths between 100 and 400 metres;
according to some recent studies, the kingfish maintains a constant body temperature, and as happens with mammals and birds, its meat is considered very valuable.
In consideration of its high weight, the specimen found in Procida this morning was recovered by an islander with the help of some friends.
