A motorist was arrested for excessively speeding on Saturday February 3 by the Ain departmental road safety squadron.
His vehicle was flashed at 225 km/h on the A40 motorway, which links Mâcon to Geneva, via Bourg-en-Bresse.
That is 95 km/h above the limit.
The BMW SUV was impounded immediately.
Since last year, the Ain prefecture has authorized the police to impound, for a fixed period of 7 days, vehicles used to commit these excessive speeding incidents.
A definitive confiscation of the vehicle could be ordered by the courts.
The driver also risks a fine of 1,500 euros and a three-year driving license suspension.
“Major cause of accident”
The gendarmes point out that
“excessive speed is a major cause of accidents in the department and the leading cause of death on the Ain motorways”
.
In January it was the driver of a Porsche 911 who was stopped by the military at 204 km/h instead of 110. Closer to Lyon, another driver was arrested speeding on the hard shoulder of emergency on the A42 at 190 km/h.
