Over 400 new ticket machines are to be installed in Munich's S-Bahn network.

New operating functions are intended to make purchasing tickets easier.

Munich – The Munich S-Bahn network is getting new ticket machines.

Deutsche Bahn announces that over 400 machines are to be replaced, and the majority of them will be replaced by the middle of the year.

The goal: This should make ticket sales more convenient for passengers.

Visually, the new machines differ primarily in their color: the previous red and gray terminals will be replaced by blue and yellow ones.

“Easy ticket purchasing is not only a prerequisite for easy access to buses and trains, but also means quality travel for passengers,” says Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter.

Although digital tickets on smartphones are becoming increasingly popular, the classic sales channels of ticket vending machines and customer centers remain important for many passengers.

“They also need to be continually developed in order to remain attractive.”

That's exactly what's happening over the course of the year: a 70 centimeter high and 40 centimeter wide, particularly bright and high-resolution touchscreen is intended to improve purchases.

In addition to the input mask for purchasing tickets, it shows a map with stops for regional trains, S-Bahn and subway trains in the MVV area.

The map can be zoomed and the travel destination can be selected directly from the map using the touchscreen.

An additional display in the upper area shows the next departures at the respective station in real time.

What is also new is that multiple tickets can be purchased from the machines in one transaction - something that was previously not possible.

Customers can pay with cash, card, smartphone or smartwatch.

At locations with several of the new machines, there will also be those where payments can only be made cashless.
