Netto Marken-Discount advertises the ready-made coffee “Cafèt Latte Cappuccino” by saying that it is climate-neutral.

A court has now decided: this no longer works.

Amberg – Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) celebrates a decision by the Amberg regional court.

There, the Netto discount chain was prohibited from advertising the ready-made coffee “Cafét Latte Cappuccino” as climate-neutral.

The reason: The production of the cappuccino is simply not climate-neutral.

The DUH therefore demands that Netto “immediately end the consumer deception”.

German environmental aid successful: Netto is not allowed to advertise cappuccino as climate-neutral

The background to it all is as follows: Netto Marken-Discount Stiftung & Co. KG advertises the ready-made coffee “Cafét Latte Cappuccino” as climate-neutral.

However, the company does not achieve this by making the cappuccino truly climate-neutral in its production - but by purchasing emissions credits through short-lived forest projects.

German environmental aid has now announced in a press release that a decision has been made in a court case it has initiated.

The regional court in Amberg, near the Netto company headquarters in Maxhütte-Haidhof (Schwandorf district), “found that the selected forest protection projects are not sufficient to advertise a product as climate-neutral,” it says.

Not a climate-neutral cappuccino - so Netto is not allowed to advertise it as such

Emissions credits are about allowing companies to buy these certificates for products that cannot be produced in a climate-neutral manner (or at least for which it is difficult) in order to offset the climate damage in some respects by investing in climate projects.

In this case, Netto tried to justify the climate neutrality of the finished coffee by purchasing “emission credits from forest protection and reforestation projects in Brazil and Uruguay,” as the DUH writes.

However, the short-lived forest projects would not compensate for the ready-made coffee.

Jürgen Resch, Federal Managing Director of the DUH, commented on the judgment with the words:

This verdict against Germany's largest cheap discounter is a clear signal to retailers to finally end the consumer deception with supposedly climate-neutral products.

We need honest competition between trade and industry in order to achieve a reduction in the ecological footprint of products - not a cheap indulgence trade with unregulated emissions credits.

We call on Netto to respect the ruling and to end the consumer deception with dubious promises of climate neutrality for all products.”

Jürgen Resch, Federal Managing Director DUH

The Amberg regional court has now ruled that Netto Marken-Discount Stiftung & Co. KG – under threat of a fine – can no longer bear the “climate neutral” label.

Product.
