Due to the mild weather, amphibian migrations are beginning in Bavaria: The State Association for Bird Protection is urgently looking for helpers to bring frogs, toads, etc. safely across the roads.

Munich - The weather is getting milder - and various animals will soon be on their way out of their winter quarters.

Frogs and toads in particular are then out and about on the roads and volunteers are already getting ready to help the animals with protective fences so that they are not run over on the roads.

The current weather situation is perfect for the amphibians to begin their migrations

At night, around six degrees and rain are exactly the weather conditions in which frogs and toads become active, said a spokeswoman for the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV).

Volunteers across Bavaria are now preparing for the amphibian migration.

Protective fences are intended to protect the animals from dying on the streets.

However, helpers are still urgently needed in some regions, such as in the Würzburg and Cham districts.

The LBV helper groups are deployed throughout Bavaria, from Fürstenfeldbruck to Berchtesgadener Land, from Cham to Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen.

“Across Bavaria, numerous LBV volunteers are setting up or repairing protective fences along roads,” says LBV amphibian expert Andreas von Lindeiner.

However, helping hands are still needed, and involvement in checking the fences is very welcome, especially during the hike until around mid-April.

Bavarian districts are still looking for volunteers

There is a particularly urgent need for helping hands in Würzburg and Cham: in 2023, volunteers in the Cham district helped more than 12,000 toads and frogs cross the road, it was said.

“This allowed them to reach their spawning grounds safely.

Unfortunately, it is currently uncertain whether this success will also be achieved in the upcoming season.”

The volunteers' work includes checking the fences, usually in the early evening and early morning.

If there are amphibians in the buckets set up, they are carried across the street and the species, gender and number are documented.

According to the Federal Nature Conservation Association, 10 of 19 amphibian species in Bavaria are endangered and are on the red list.
